Brief Summary of The Mysticism of Sound and Music

Posted in Critical Research on April 30, 2010 by crystallinesphere

This book has dramatically affected my views of music. I think that it’s going to contribute to a revision of my project proposal.

The book is by Hazrat Inayat Khan and what follows are the key concepts that I gained from it:

Music and sound are very powerful creative forces. (This has probably affected me the most, in that I will be careful about what I am creating).

True music is a reflection of pure beauty.

The Universe is vibration.

Sound and music can be used for spiritual attainment.

Create harmony.

Japanese Style Poem Inspired By The World Is Sound

Posted in Project Proposal Ideas on April 30, 2010 by crystallinesphere

I have written a Japanese style poem that condenses thoughts down into a short amount of words. It is inspired by ‘The World is Sound’ book by Joachim-Ernst Berendt.

Sitting, Thinking,

Experience Love,

Connected, One,

All is sound.

Brief Kate Bush Review

Posted in Critical Research on April 30, 2010 by crystallinesphere

Been listening a lot to Kate Bush’s album ‘Hounds of Love’. She seems to the kind of thing that I would like to do, which is a combination of “arty” concepts with popular forms. Stand out tracks are ‘Running up that hill’, ‘Cloudbusting’ and ‘Hounds of love’. Running up that hill is genius. Just a really good track with driving drums and amazing vocals. Bush’s style seems to be so unique to her, an authentic expression. Hounds of love has backing vocals of women making dog sounds, amazing!

John Martyn

Have been listening to John Martyn lately, especially the album Solid Air. This is a really good example of my main musical interests, in that it is very soulful and acoustically guitar driven. I’m going to experiment with his use of echo on guitar i.e. echo as a filter while playing live. It seems to add another dimension to the music.

I have so far secured one day of work experience at G39 which I hope will blossom into something regular as a volunteer. I will be invigilating at an exhibition.
