After A Brief Hiatus

It’s been a while. Recently I’ve been reading the book  Audio Culture, and have made some very concise notes, mainly for my up and coming dissertation.

– Acousmatic listening: listening to sounds in the absence of their original sources and visual contexts, a listening that thus gives access to sound as such. p.xiv (Schaeffer)

– The traditional orchestra was no longer capable of capturing the imagination of a culture immersed in noise. Russolo p.5

– Varese described his own music as the “collision of sound-masses,” blocks of sound “moving at different speeds and at different angles.” p.5

– Perfect silence is never more than a conceptual ideal, an aural vanishing point. Cage p.6
